Chapter Fourteen
A couple more days passed. I walked and did my therapy every day. I didnât feel like I was getting much better with my speech, but my body felt stronger. I regained some of my energy. I wasnât sleeping half the day away anymore. I could usually get the words out that I wanted to say, but most of the time they werenât in order. Most of the bandages had been taken off, but a few still covered the areas where I had surgery. If I did anything but sit still and breathe, my ribs hurt.
The doctors talked about letting me out in a few more days, which made me happy. I needed to get out of here. It was depressing. Other than the music, I didnât really have anything to do. I could watch TV, but most of the programs were reruns because it was summer.
One of the things that hurt the most was missing my high school graduation. I had finished my finals and passed everything, but I had been in the hospital when my class graduated. I hated Josh for taking that away from me. Now, I didnât know if Iâd have a college graduation. I couldnât talk, read, or writeâ¦how was I going to go to college?
That was all taken away from me because I had to pick the wrong guy to fall in love with. He took my heart, my baby, my voice, my education, my futureâ¦everything. There would never be a normal for me.
Miranda came every day. Sheâd stay as long as she could. She had to go back to work, so she wasnât here all the time anymore. My parents didnât come as much either. I guessed once they knew Iâd be okay they went back to their normal lives. Sophie came a couple of times. I donât think anyone really realized the severity of my head injury. I began to wonder if anyone cared. Somewhere deep inside me I knew Iâd never be the same again. I might talk correctly again, I might read and write again, but Iâd never be the same girl.
I was allowed to go home at the end of June. The nurses changed all my bandages and gave me some to take home. âYou shouldnât need more than this. Just watch the incisions through the weekend.â
âOkay.â
One nurse handed me a folder of papers. âThis is all your discharge information. This will tell you what to look out for, what you can and canât do, and when to call your doctor. It also lists your medications.â The nurse pulled out a sheet. âThis is a pain medication, so is this one. And the third one is an antibiotic.â I nodded.
âThe last part is about your therapy. Youâre scheduled for an hour every day for a month. As time goes on, itâll become less and less. Hopefully, youâll make a complete recovery. You also need to make follow-up appointments with the neurologist, a pulmonary doctor, and a regular doctor. Do you understand all this?â
âYes.
